Why only on PS4 for Japan? We understand the market dynamics behind this decision which is nothing new really. But we’re curious. You’re working on three versions, your work is done either way, why not just release all versions of the game in Japan as well, even if the additional ones are only offered digitally? Maybe, sometimes, there are specific agreements requiring such an approach, but, at the same time, it happens often enough that we can’t help but think it can’t always be because of such an agreement.
We don’t really think in terms of Japanese market and western market nowadays. Because we know that there are One Piece fans all over the world and so we want those fans to be able to enjoy the game on the hardware that they have. And then we thought what kind of hardware fans around the world would have and basically it is PS4, PC and Xbox One. So, we created the game for each of those format and then provided each territory with appropriate versions.
We understand the the story for World Seeker is a totally new story.
Yes it’s an original story created for the game.
Is this story supposed to be canon?
I can’t give too much detail about the story although a new trailer has come out but it’s basically going to this island and it’s a completely new adventure that he has there.
Still, can’t we get a straight answer as to whether this new story is considered canon or not? After all, every series has canon stories, filler stories, standalone stories etc. What kind of story is this in terms of the series’ bigger picture?
So, it’s not part of the story so far, it’s a standalone story. We wanted the fans to be able to enjoy the story in its own right, so it’s a completely original story.
Fair enough. We tried the game for a bit and saw that we can change between two different sets of skills with the push of a button. Let’s say we want to commit to a particular skill set. Can we only use that to go through the game or will the game’s design make us mix and match depending on the situation?
You can switch skill sets but if you want to stick to the same skill set you can do that as well. Although certain skills sets will be better for fighting certain boss characters but it is up to you, you can use the one the suits you.
So if we stick to one of the two, we won’t be breaking the game and we can actually finish it, even if we completely ignore the other one?
Yes. However, there are some special skills that don’t appear yet in the demo and I think players will want to experiment with and to try out some of these new skills.
OK. One more questions then. Open-world game designs isn’t exactly the norm for this kind of game, so this must be new to the franchise and kind of new to you as well. So jumping to open-world game design for the sake of One Piece: World Seeker, which was the most interesting challenge you had to face?
There were plenty of challenges. One which was unique, I think, to this game was the fact that Luffy has the ability to move around the island, the world of the game, very quickly and this is something we’re still working on a way to utilise that in a way that players can enjoy. But I’m hoping that is going to be one of the most fun elements for the player.
